| Since 1990, the Foundation has been busy, but
with little to show for our activity. Our first mission was to solicit donations from the
GS Alumni, using the addresses in the Alumni Database. However, most of the addresses in
the database had not been updated since the time of each student's attendance. Many of the
addresses were over 20 years out of date. This fact, coupled with the high cost of mass
mailings, eventually prompted the Foundation to discontinue this practice until the Alumni
Association has updated the addresses in the database, which will be a time-consuming
process. After the failure of the mass mailing route, we decided to hire a professional fund-raising organization to assist the Foundation with soliciting corporate donations. However, a year of searching did not provide us with a reliable, experienced, local organization that would agree to work on commission. Thus, we also abandoned this route. In 1994, we were contacted by Shortt Stories Video Productions, who wanted to produce a one-hour video about the School. With permission of Jim Bray and Dan Gallamore, the Directors of the two schools, we agreed to allow the video. The video is now complete, and has been aired on UNC-TV public television. Copies of the video are available through the Alumni Association, and proceeds from the sale benefit the GS Foundation. While the video was a success, it does not have wide enough distribution to generate sufficient funding. Since past alumni have been difficult to reach, the Foundation decided this summer to begin soliciting donations from the parents of current GS students. These funds are earmarked for creating a Speakers Series, to bring nationally prominent leaders in the arts and sciences to speak at the School. We also plan a reception at the North Carolina Museum of Art to raise corporate awareness of the School's needs. |
