| Donations received as a result of the 1996
membership drive were used to support the Foundation's plan of sponsoring a speaker's
series for the two campuses. This year, each campus received $1500.00 to cover the costs
of bringing a well-known speaker to the campus. GS West used the Foundation contribution to bring Anthony de Mare for an all-day visit with music students and a evening concert. Recognized throughout the world as a leading exponent of 20th-century music, pianist Anthony de Mare has been described as fascinating, compelling, incredibly articulate, humorous, compassionate, and alive. His dedication to the music of our time has led him to create programs illuminating the spectrum of musical thought in the 20th century which are noted for their unique ability to communicate to a broad range of audiences. Anthony de Mares career has been highlighted by such honors as First Prize and Audience Prize at the International Gaudeamus Interpreters Competition in the Netherlands and First Prize at the International Competition of Contemporary Piano Music in France. As a Young Concert Artist, he made his New York debut at the 92nd Street Y and his Washington, DC debut at the Kennedy Center. GS East used the Foundation contribution to bring Dori Sanders. Ms Sanders is a native of South Carolina who has published two novels for teens/young adults. Clover (1990) is the story of a biracial family living in Clover, SC, Sanders hometown where she still has a peach farm. Clover is described as having "authenticity of voice" in describing parental death and racial prejudice of both blacks and whites. Sanders also published In Her Place in 1996 and Dori Sanders' Country Cooking. Sanders is on her way to deliver a paper in Denmark on Southern Life: Fact and Fiction. She will use her experiences with GSE students as a contributing source for her paper. |
