Help Save GS: Join our Fifty In Fifty Program!
(If you
are already in the program, read the Instructions.)
As alumni
of the Governor’s School, we are all upset that GS funding has been cut
completely. GS was a powerful experience in our lives, and we want to keep
that spirit alive and make GS available for future generations of North
Carolina’s gifted and talented students.
With
31,000 alumni, we feel strongly that we can provide support for the program
for 2012 and into the future. But we do have a bit of a start-up problem –
we are not in contact with all 31,000 alumni. The GSAA did not exist prior
to 1988, and did not get a complete list of all alumni until 1995. The vast
majority of records from prior to 1995 are the address at which the student
was living when they attended Governor’s School. Some of the addresses were
32 years out-of-date then – and are 48 years out-of-date now.
Fifty In Fifty - An Alumni Scavenger Hunt!
And this
is where you can help. In order to get the support of as many alumni as
possible, we need current contact information for them all. That is what
Fifty In Fifty is all about – finding fifty alumni in fifty days. Here is
how it works.
1)
You join the Fifty In Fifty program
by sending your name and zip code to gsaa5050@yahoo.com.
2)
We send you our current, past, and possible contact
information for 50 alumni living in your area.
3)
Over the next 50 days, you will try to find those 50
alumni and get current contact information for them. We will arm you with
telephone scripts and guidelines on how to make contact and get
information.
4)
When you get good contact information, enter it into
our Alumni
Database.
5)
After fifty days, any alumni you have not found go
back into the pool.
If 620
alumni will take up this challenge, we can confirm the addresses of 31,000
alumni in seven weeks.
Fifty In Fifty – Securing Governor’s School for the Future!
With the
loss of state funding, GS will survive or fail based on the support we are
able to get from charitable foundations, corporate philanthropy, and our alumni.
If we were in contact with all 31,000 GS alumni, and each would donate just
$50 per year, we could fund two campuses and 800 students at no cost to the
students or their families. The more alumni we are able to contact, the
more likely it will be that we can provide GS as a free program, open to
any deserving student regardless of their ability to pay. That is how
Governor’s School was for all of us who attended prior to 2009, and that is
how it should be for the future.
So
please, if you have the time, the energy, and the desire to provide GS for
future generations, join our Fifty In Fifty program
and help us find our lost GS comrades. The future of Governor’s School is
in your hands.
